How Old Is Your Dog in Human Years?

Our Dog Age Calculator converts your dog’s age to human-equivalent years in seconds — using real veterinary science, not the outdated “multiply by 7” myth.

About this tool

What Is the Dog Age Calculator?

Every dog owner has wondered: “How old is my dog, really?” The FrenchieNova Dog Age Calculator gives you a meaningful, science-backed answer — not just a number, but an understanding of where your dog is in their life journey.

Smarter than “multiply by 7”

For decades, pet owners used the rule that one dog year equals seven human years. It was catchy — and completely inaccurate. A one-year-old dog is not equivalent to a 7-year-old child; they’re a full-blown teenager. By their second birthday, they’ve lived the equivalent of 24 human years.

Our calculator uses guidelines from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) combined with breed-size adjustments developed through peer-reviewed research. The result is a human-equivalent age that actually reflects your dog’s biological maturity, energy level, and health needs — so you can be the best owner possible at every stage of their life.

Whether you have a tiny Chihuahua or a towering Great Dane, this tool tailors its calculation to your dog’s size, because breed size is the single biggest factor in how dogs age.

How it works

Three Steps to Your Dog’s True Age

No complicated inputs, no account required. Just three quick steps and you’ll have a clear picture of your dog’s life stage.

01

Enter your dog’s age

Type in how many years (or months) your dog has lived. If you know their birthday, you can enter that instead for pinpoint accuracy.

02

Select their breed size

Choose from small (<20 lbs), medium (20–50 lbs), large (50–90 lbs), or giant (>90 lbs). Size is the primary factor driving how quickly dogs age.

03

Get your instant result

See your dog’s human-equivalent age and life stage — puppy, adolescent, adult, or senior — so you can fine-tune their care, nutrition, and vet schedule.

The science

How Dog Age Is Really Calculated

Modern veterinary science has replaced the old myth with two key frameworks — and our calculator uses both to give you the most accurate result.

UC San Diego DNA Methylation Formula (Wang et al., 2020)
Human Age = 16 × ln(Dog Age) + 31
Derived from epigenetic clock research on 104 Labrador Retrievers spanning a 16-year age range. The natural logarithm (ln) captures dogs’ rapid early aging and slower later aging.

The AVMA guidelines further simplify this into three practical rules: the first year of a medium-sized dog’s life equals approximately 15 human years. The second year adds roughly 9 more. Every subsequent year after that is equivalent to about 5 human years. Large and giant breeds accelerate through these milestones faster, while small breeds age more slowly.

Common misconceptions

Myth vs. Fact

Dog aging is widely misunderstood. Here are the most common myths — and what the science actually says.

Myth
1 dog year always equals 7 human years, for every dog.
Fact
Year 1 ≈ 15 human years; year 2 ≈ 9 more; each year after ≈ 5. The rate is non-linear.
Myth
All dog breeds age at the same pace regardless of size.
Fact
Large breeds age faster and have shorter lifespans than small breeds — sometimes by 4–6 years.
Myth
A 7-year-old dog is middle-aged, no matter the breed.
Fact
Giant breeds are often senior at 5–6; small breeds may not reach senior status until age 10–11.
Myth
A 1-year-old dog is equivalent to a 7-year-old child.
Fact
A 1-year-old dog is more like a 15-year-old teenager — sexually mature and nearly fully grown.

How Size Shapes a Dog’s Lifespan

One of the most counterintuitive facts in canine biology: larger dogs age faster and live shorter lives than smaller ones. Here’s how each size category compares.

🐩
Small breeds
<20 lbs
Chihuahua, Toy Poodle, Dachshund, Maltese
Avg. lifespan: 14–16 years
🐕
Medium breeds
20–50 lbs
Beagle, Cocker Spaniel, Border Collie, Bulldog
Avg. lifespan: 11–13 years
🦮
Large breeds
50–90 lbs
Labrador, German Shepherd, Husky, Boxer
Avg. lifespan: 9–12 years
🐕‍🦺
Giant breeds
>90 lbs
Great Dane, St. Bernard, Mastiff, Newfoundland
Avg. lifespan: 7–10 years
Why it matters

Knowing Your Dog’s Age Improves Their Care

Understanding your dog’s true biological age — not just calendar years — helps you make smarter decisions about nutrition, exercise, dental health, and veterinary check-ups. A dog in their senior years needs fundamentally different support than an adult dog, even if the calendar years look similar.

year lifespan gap between small & giant breeds

Tip for pet parents: Veterinarians generally consider dogs “senior” when they’ve reached 75% of their expected lifespan. For a Chihuahua that might be 10–11 years; for a Great Dane it’s as early as 5–6. Knowing your dog’s true age helps you start senior care at the right time — not too early, not too late.
